A Tale of Two Cities

The former capital of Mdina and the beautiful 16th century walled Valletta will provide a perfect introduction to Malta.

Embark on a scenic drive to Malta’s old capital, Mdina, one of the world’s finest examples of a living medieval city.

Once in the heart of the ‘Silent City’, your guide will host you on a walking tour through the narrow, winding medieval streets. Soak up the atmosphere of this old Arab capital, where the squares and houses are characterised by their Norman architecture. Admire the stunning views from the bastions, over the valley and the surrounding areas.

Your next stop is the present day capital, Valletta. Continuing through the historic streets you’ll pass by St John’s Co-Cathedral. (exterior view only).Have your camera at the ready, as you pass the Grand Master’s Palace, which today houses Malta’s Parliament and President’s Office. From the highest point of the 16th century bastion walls that the Knights of St John built to protect the city are the Barrakka Gardens. From the vantage point, enjoy splendid views of the Three Cities and the Grand Harbour.

Your picturesque drive through the city will start off by passing the Valletta fortifications via Fort St Elmo. Along the scenic coast road you’ll see St Paul’s Islands where St Paul was said to have been shipwrecked in AD60.

Heading north, you’ll pass Mdina, the old medieval capital of Malta, its bastions and Cathedral dome dominating the skyline. It is a place of timeless atmosphere, cultural and religious treasures. A brief photo stop overlooking the spectacular cliff formation at the Blue Grotto.

Time permitting enjoy a brief photo stop at the quaint fishing village of Marsaxlokk, where you can view the local fishermen at work. During the Great Siege of Malta, Marsaxlokk harbour was used as an anchorage by the Turkish fleet. Today, the only boats anchored in the harbour are the colourful Maltese fishing boats known as the ‘luzzu’. From here your coach will take you to the airport.

A perfect tour to explore 2 of Malta’s popular resorts independently.

Leaving the quayside, and accompanied by your escort, you’ll take a trip towards Vittoriosa, for some free time to explore this charming waterside city.

Re-board your coach and drive to the southern-most part of the island, Marsaxlokk, Malta's largest fishing village. Here, you can spend your free time browsing the bustling open market selling a variety of souvenirs and local crafts. Take the opportunity of snapping a few photos in this picturesque bay with its hundreds of colourful fishing boats, or just stop for a coffee in one of the many cafés along the seafront and watch the world go by.

Relax on your coach on the transfer back to the ship.

This excursion will operate by coach and on foot. The time spent in Vittoriosa is around 45 minutes and in Marsaxlokk around 1½ hours. This tour is non-guided and does not include any meals, refreshments or entrance fees. You are advised to carry Euros. The level of walking is at passengers’ discretion.

Golden Sands Beach by Double Decker

Have some fun in the sun, and take a scenic ride onboard an open top double-decker bus to Golden Sands Beach.

All aboard, for an hour’s audio guided scenic drive on an open top double-decker bus. Golden Sands lies on the north-western coast and offers one of the best sandy beaches on Malta.

Departing Valletta, you’ll drive through the town of Hamrun, and past the St Cagetan sanctuary, and the ancient aqueducts of Santa Venera. You will also pass by San Anton Palace, which is the residence of the President of Malta. Continue past Attard towards the outskirts of Mdina where you’ll be able to see the Mosta Dome from afar. Drive through the countryside and the rural villages of Zebbiegh and Mgarr before arriving at Golden Sands Beach.

After a short walk to the beach, you’ll have approximately 2½ hours to soak up the sun and enjoy a swim.

After your stay, you’ll meet at the agreed time for the return drive to the ship. On the return transfer you will drive past St Paul’s islands and along the panoramic coast road.

Mdina On Your Own

Discover Malta’s old capital, Mdina, at your own pace.

Embark on a scenic drive, passing through Valletta as you travel inland to the medieval ‘Silent City’ of Mdina. En route your knowledgeable guide will highlight some of the ‘must see’ sights and provide you with a map.

As you wander through the city’s narrow and silent streets, you’ll be transported to a bygone era. The city is relatively untouched by modern development and remains virtually traffic free.

Enjoy approximately 2 hours of free time, to explore this ancient walled city.
