About Alicante

Built around a natural harbour, the main city and cruise port on Spain's Costa Blanca, Alicante, is also a top beach resort in its own right. It has a sophisticated Mediterranean feel with its restored old town adding to its charm and the attraction of its sandy beaches. Dubbed the 'City of Light' when founded by the Romans, Alicante is still a relaxing place to walk around.

Down from the impressive Castillo de Santa Barbara fortress, which offers impressive views across the city, most activity centres in the streets around the Ayuntamiento, a plaza area buzzing with restaurants and tapas bars. There are also many cafés along the seafront.

Works by artists including Dali, Miro and Picasso are on show at the Museo de Arte Siglo and there is also an archaeological museum.

Explore Alicante – a bustling, cosmopolitan city with a fascinating Moorish past.

Visit the Moorish Castle of Santa Barbara, one of Europe’s largest medieval fortresses. Set high on Benacantil Hill, gaze down from the Castle battlements over the city and surrounding coastline. Enjoy a refreshing glass of Sangria at a bar inside the Castle.

Explore the baroque-style Monastery of Santa Faz, with its pyramid-shaped dome. Inside the Monastery, you’ll find a relic brought from the Vatican in the 15th century which, as tradition has it, is actually a cloth used by Christ to dry his bloodied face during the Stations of the Cross.

A guided stroll takes you through the charming old Moorish quarter, nestling at the foot of the imposing Castle. The Cathedral Church of Saint Nicholas has an austere renaissance façade, and inside you’ll discover a magnificent 17th century nave and 15th century cloister. You’ll also see the impressive 18th century baroque Town Hall, where your guide will provide you with details of its imposing exterior before some free time.

On the beautiful palm-lined Esplanade of Spain, sample the delicious local specialty first introduced to Alicante by the Moors: ‘Horchata’, a sweetened milk of crushed tiger nuts.

Essential information

This excursion will operate by coach and on foot and involves walking over cobbled streets with steps at the Town Hall. There are also steep steps and inclines at the Castle. An interior visit of the Town Hall cannot be made at weekends. The order of highlights may vary.
